Polymer Clay

Can I use resin to coat my polymer clay pendants?
I’m planning to use resin to seal and coat my pendants made out of polymer clay..
But I’m worried that the acrylic paint and mica powder that I’m going to use on the surface of the pendants will fade or mix with the resin…
If I can’t use resin, is there any substitute?
This can be long topic for discussion. Diane had some good suggestions, however, I disagree with her saying that mica doesn’t need a sealant. When mica is rubbed onto polymer clay, no matter how well, it does require a sealer or over time the mica will wear off, especially on pieces of jewelry. If the mica is worked INTO the clay, that is a different matter. Yes, some mica powder colours could be affected by the chemicals in resin, but quite often heat during baking can do that also and applying varnish will make the mica ‘pop’ again. Blue for instance will turn somewhat silvery with heat and/or resin and loose some of its intensity. Water based varnishes work best with mica powders as they are less likely to affect the dye used with the mica colorant.
Acrylic paint won’t be affected by the resin, but it has to be absolutely dry. Some resins vary in nature as well. 2 part resins are chemically different than UV resins for which Ultraviolet rays are the reactant for hardening. I prefer using the UV resins to apply over mica and other surface treatments and haven’t found any adverse reactions. www.ultradome.com sells UV resin and Magic Glos by Lisa Pavelka is another. Both are cured either with natural sun or via a UV light such as a Nail Art lamp. If you choose not to use resin, but really want some great gloss, then I recommend Fimo Lacquer. Fimo Water base varnish is not as shiny, but the Lacquer is thicker. It sells in little bottles with a brush attached so you don’t need a solvent to clean the brush each time. The Lacquer makes the mica shimmer.
