Recycled Wood Flooring Options For Your Home

 

Recycled wood has taken the interior design world by storm. When you take the time to research reclaimed wood products, you may just find that they are very cost effective and eco-friendly which in the long run can save you money and provide a healthy environment for your family’s future. Wood can be restored and given a new life through furniture such as old benches, tables, and cabinets, the possibilities are endless to redesign and recycle old furniture. Hardwood species that are frequently used for flooring in the reclaimed industry are pine, walnut, cherry, hickory, maple, chestnut, and of course the all time favorite oak. These newly restored pieces of workmanship have so much more depth, history in the markings and natural beauty.

 

Reclaimed  has been recognized as one of the most beautiful floors in the hardwood industry for many years. You will find oak particularly in wide plank boards cut into a quarter sawn patterns. Quarter sawn oak has become the favorite choice over radiant heated floors. During the “Old America” year’s oak timbers was the preferred choice to build barns, homes, and most buildings. Quarter sawn Oak Lumber is re-milled from the recycled oak logs and beams that were used in early construction. Therefore over time it stays very strong and durable that very rarely rots or decays.

 

Cherry is also a premiere hardwood due to its size, fine texture, and hardness, moderate shrinkage in drying and excellent workability. Quarter sawn cherry floors are one of the most stable floors you will find.

 

American Walnut is also top on the list of repurposed wood. Walnut is very scratch resistant, for those of us with pets, or high traffic areas. Reclaimed walnut works easily with hand tools, machines, and nails and screws with ease. This makes it very appealing to be used for wood turning and carving, High Quality furniture, cabinetmaking, boatbuilding, musical instruments, airplane propellers, gunstocks and flooring.

 

One of the most sought after domestic hardwoods, cherry is known for its remarkably attractive figure and subtle beauty. With its fine, even texture and clean workability, cherry was the cabinet lumber of choice for colonial furniture and cabinet makers as well as the renowned Shaker craftsmen of the 19th Century.

 

Pine is creamy-white and moderately decay-resistant wood is used extensively in all areas of woodworking, cabinets, scroll saw & craft work, folk art and even wood turning for table legs. It has some grain pattern but not as much as say, red oak.

 

The red and white oaks are the most abundant hardwood species in the United States. It would be difficult to name a wood with a longer and more illustrious history in furnishings and interior design.

 

There are so many species of beautiful hardwoods that can be repurposed transformed into a work of fine art. Reclaimed wood is generally old-growth-lumber that was harvested from trees that were bigger and older than anything being currently harvested. Most reclaimed wood is old. However, there are new forms of recycled hardwood flooring that are being created. These options use the scraps left over by flooring and lumber manufactures. The pieces are glued together, milled, and finished. The end result is a modern and/or contemporary looking floor that is also extremely durable, not just eco-friendly. When you consider that flooring makers use only 40-60 percent of a log’s usable lumber, the waste that is saved with these new brands of recycled hardwood flooring is quite remarkable. Also the unique, liner look and mixture of wood grains adds a touch of style to your home that is hard to recreate. Reclaimed products are very eco-friendly, and you will be a big part of preserving our environment for years to come.
